Roni Horn'/><title type='text'>Words &amp; Pictures</title><content type='html'>Words &amp; Pictures &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;ART:21: Talk about titles.&lt;br /&gt;   &lt;br /&gt;HORN: There’s so much written about titles. I don’t like descriptive titles. I don’t like titles that if you don’t read them you don’t get the piece. I want a title that can be an entrance to something but never an explanation. A title is more about staying away from certain things, but sort of showing you an entrance without naming it. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I develop a title it’s usually a critical part of thinking about the piece. It’s my way into the work. Sometimes (and I know this sounds kind of contradictory) it actually comes at the end. With "Her, Her, Her, and Her...," I’d gone through the experience of the piece and the title came afterwards. With "Becoming a Landscape," I had the title before I created the piece—I had the understanding of where I wanted to go but I didn’t have the place where I was going. &lt;br /&gt;   &lt;br /&gt;ART:21: What about the title "gurgles, sucks, echoes"?&lt;br /&gt;   &lt;br /&gt;HORN: "gurgles, sucks, echoes" was a phrase taken from a text I wrote. Those drawings were mostly just pictures of words. I don’t really think of them as visualizing the content of the word, necessarily, or the meaning of the word. It was just "gurgles, sucks, echoes"—pretty arbitrary in a way—but a little bit about holding on to that phrase in my life. Every time I use that phrase it’s like eating, like savoring something.&lt;br /&gt;   &lt;br /&gt;ART:21: How do text and sculpture function together in your work?&lt;br /&gt;   &lt;br /&gt;HORN: I often get questions about text pieces like "Key and Cue". This type of work, where you’re supposedly in this visual realm and all of a sudden there is text, is not easy for a lot of people. I think of text as visual—but that, I think, is oddly Jewish. When you are brought up with the graven image as forbidden, because the graven image is a metaphor for a visualization, then it’s absolutely primary that language would replace that role. I never questioned it. It was only when I was asked about language in my work, in the finished object, that it became clear to me from a conscious level. I never really distinguished between symbolic visual ‘language’ versus descriptive visual ‘photograph’. It’s pretty obscure, but I think there is some Jewish cultural element to that. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My relationship to my work is extremely verbal, extremely language-based. I am probably more language-based than I am visual, and I move through language to arrive at the visual. So I’ve always questioned whether I am really a visual artist. You get into this situation where your ‘identity’ takes over your actual being because you get stuck with whatever it is you resemble to other people—not who you are. They’re not necessarily the same thing. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For example, Margret in "You Are the Weather," that was fascinating because that was out of the context of this Iceland series. I did have a very specific idea that I wanted to see if I could elicit a place from her face—almost like a landscape. It was very much a wordless interaction, the two months we spent together. When you do a portrait, it’s about mutual trust...that the person you’re working with trusts you so that the image is fluent with whom she or he is. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There’s a story about Georgia that hits the nail on the head for me. She had seen "You Are the Weather" as a kid. I asked if I could photograph her. She was maybe five or six years old. She said, “Oh, Roni, you can take pictures but you can’t show them.” I thought, “Wow, that’s interesting.” I let it go. And a couple of years later she said, “Okay, Roni, you can...” I really just recorded her in action...a girl becoming a woman...trying on identities. That was very much her energy. It wasn’t orchestrated.&lt;br /&gt;   &lt;br /&gt;ART:21: What about the title of the piece with Georgie?&lt;br /&gt;   &lt;br /&gt;HORN: "This is Me, This is You." Georgia didn’t give it to me, I took it from her. When she was very young she used to look at pictures and point at different things in the picture, kids do that. Like the dandelion, they’ll say, “This is me.” And then the rabbit, they’ll say, “This is you.” I just very much hooked into that. Every time she would come to visit me we’d look at pictures and she would pick herself out and pick me out.&lt;br /&gt;   &lt;br /&gt;ART:21: Are there differences between the installation and book?&lt;br /&gt;   &lt;br /&gt;HORN: In the case of "You Are the Weather," I originally went into that work thinking it was going to be part of this series of books. So I knew whatever I came up with already had a frame around it with a certain identity to it. When I started looking at all the material it became clear to me that there was something else here that I wouldn’t be able to get at with a book form. That became the photographic installation, the experiential element.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What I like about photographic installation—and I think that what I do with photographic work is very much informed by having been a sculptor, meaning someone who works in the actual—is that you’re working with the image which is the opposite of the actual. You’re working with the thing that you can peel off of something and still have the actual. That idea of image introduced into the actual was part of what I was questioning. "You Are the Weather," which is a photographic surround, is definitely connected or linked up with the architecture—more or less synonymous with it—because it goes on all four walls. You walk in and you’re surrounded by up to a hundred images...which are one portrait of a person who is a multitude. So it comes in, and goes back out. The viewer’s relationship to the portrait is very erotic because there is eye contact and ambiguity, and in my mind the ambiguity is very much about the viewer—about what the viewer wants from the subject. &lt;br /&gt;   &lt;br /&gt;ART:21: What’s the rest of this piece about?&lt;br /&gt;   &lt;br /&gt;HORN: Identity in general—in a very broad sense. A moment-to-moment shift in image and identity. In a photograph, that shift in image is all you know from one sequence to the next sequence. If the spectator steps a bit closer, he can view the archaeological excavation site from a balustrade guarding the edge of the pit. Standing there, he will see an unearthed, shingle-roofed spire topped by a weathercock. Guillaume Bijl discovered it – or rather, he invented it, as the spectator will quickly have guessed. It is an absurd, surrealist sculpture. With their steeples, the churches of Münster are still an integral part of the urban landscape. However, Bijl is not apologizing for drawing a caricature of our expectations, but rather for betraying his normal emphasis on realism. His modesty will probably not help him much, though, for his steeple will become a tourist attraction. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Biography &lt;br /&gt;Guillaume Bijl's installations are full of irony and wit, and create an illusion of design and order, making us immediately aware of the ineptitude or the often involuntary comic of public productions. The attempts to establish order in the urban setting, and to shape it to correspond to various interests and requirements, is, according to Bijl, an illusion that becomes the motif of his art. His artistic program can neither be labelled „objet trouvé“ nor „context art“. Bijl has a priori doubts that you can experience the public by putting the public on stage, e.g. by furnishing the city. His installations deceive by presenting reality. Bijl's ‚Roman Street’ (1994) in the Middelheim Open Air Museum of Antwerp looks like an archaeological site. The artist believes that illusion is the only way to endure the lack of content and the void of things. Mas este drama musical, inicialmente catalogado como opéra-comique devido à inclusão de secções faladas, mais tarde convertidas em recitativo pelo próprio compositor, viria a ser uma obra fundamental para a renovação do género operático em França. Compositores franceses como Berlioz e o jovem Bizet manifestaram a sua cumplicidade com a estética de Gounod abraçando uma ópera mais virada, ao nível da escolha dos textos, dos cenários e da própria composição musical, para a humanidade e individualidade das personagens. Uma tendência própria do Romantismo e um desvio às majestosas produções, centradas nos grandes eventos políticos e colectivos, dos compositores da geração anterior.As primeiras edições literárias da lenda de Fausto surgem na Alemanha, no século XVI. Será, no entanto, a versão de Goethe, um género híbrido entre a poesia e o teatro, que marcará a geração romântica europeia e que servirá de referência base para o libreto da ópera de Gounod.O trabalho de composição de Gounod começou em 1856 e foi prontamente estimulado pelo director do Théâtre Lyrique, instituição da maior importância para o desenvolvimento da cultura musical francesa no terceiro quartel do século XIX. O projecto terá, no entanto, sido suspenso durante o ano de 1857, depois de esboçados os três primeiros actos. Em 1858 seriam retomados os trabalhos e Faust estrearia no ano seguinte, após diversos cortes e alterações. Expôs trabalhos fotográficos por exemplo em Los Angeles.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nos anos 90 decidiu parar para reflectir, pois achava que o seu trabalho começava a ser demasiado repetitivo.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Começou a dedicar-se mais à ciência do que à arte, até porque para Leonel Moura ,“A ciência é muito mais excitante do que a arte, ou seja o discurso da ciência e muito mais excitante do que o da arte (…) “, “ O discurso da arte é uma chatice (…) sempre a mesma coisa, (…) não tem interesse nenhum, é só adjectivos e palavras.” Dessa forma Leonel encontra o impulso para os seus trabalhos na ciência.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Por outro lado, o discurso da arquitectura também o apela mais do que o da arte. “ A arte banalizou-se (…)”. Enquanto que a arquitectura é sujeita a um julgamento muito grande por parte do público e portanto tem que ser muito bem pensada para o “grande público” , a arte é difundida apenas para um grupo de pessoas restrito, que é o meio artístico. Também a nível do pensamento, a arquitectura é mais desenvolvida, mais complexa. Há um aspecto que para Leonel Moura é importante mencionar, é o facto de que a arquitectura resulta de um trabalho em grupo, logo torna -se mais produtivo. A arte contraria este aspecto e tende a isolar-se.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Voltando a ciência, o aspecto que lhe interessa mais não é a atitude muito comum no campo das tecnologias e não pretende ilustrar a ciência. Não lhe interessa a tecnologia apesar de a ver como muito interessante, nem a ilustração da ciência;mas sim, interessa-lhe compreender o fundamento, os conhecimentos científicos e pegar nesse conhecimento e “descriá-lo” para uma utilização na arte. Ou seja, “Fazer arte com base no conhecimento científico (…)”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A atitude que mais interessa a Leonel é “Pegar em conhecimento e fazer-mos arte com isso.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Começou a produzir com o computador mas dava a entender uma forma de arte digital e ao imprimir ficava insatisfeito com os resultados. “Saiu do computador” e passou para a robótica e começou a utilizar robots. Interessante de notar, que os robots que produz&lt;br /&gt;têm reconhecimento não só como trabalho artístico mas também no domínio científico, acaba também por dar um contributo para a ciência no campo da inteligência artificial, no entanto não é esse o objectivo enquanto artista. “Enquanto artista, posso fazer o que me apetece, dizer o que me apetece, enquanto cientista não o faria.” O cientista tem determinados princípios, regras a que tem que obedecer e trabalham com um princípio de objectividade. “Eu trabalho com o princípio de subjectividade”, Leonel Moura.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“ O maior problema da arte e a mania das emoções, e acho que a maioria da arte se perde a pretender ser uma forma de expressão de emoções (…), a arte tem que ter estratégias de sedução, porque quando fazemos uma obra queremos atrair o espectador (…)”Eu excito-me com ideias, com uma boa ideia fico excitado, motivado, emocionado (…)”. Na nossa sociedade a carga emocional acaba por ser esvanecer, pois quando nos confrontamos com imagens dramáticas todos os dias na televisão, acabamos por contrair um estado de apatia, um estado “não-emocional”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Em conclusão, para Leonel Moura o emocional não pode ser um objectivo da arte, pode ser mas pode não ser. &lt;div&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;color:#333333;"&gt;O projecto, parte da dicotomia entre espaço público e privado e da sua relação com o homem.&lt;br /&gt;A relação do homem com o espaço tem-se pontuado por uma necessidade de definição de medidas e de limites que lhe permitem situar-se e criar referências com as quais define e categoriza o espaço. 'Lugares' ajustados à dimensão das suas necessidades são a meta a atingir.&lt;br /&gt;Podemos reconhecer uma ideia de 'ascese' na evolução diária e cada vez mais rápida, da forma como organizamos os nossos espaços e os fazemos crescer à nossa volta. Nesta procura, tornou-se relevante considerar um sistema de eixos, organizador do espaço e testar coordenadas como a vertical e a horizontal.
